Honda recently marched out the exciting Civic Type R prototype as the main event of a “Civicpalooza” display at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas. This marked the North American Civic Type R debut, which occurred on the heels of the car’s worldwide introduction in Paris. When the 10th generation lineup of Honda Civics hits the market in 2017, the next-gen Civic Type R will be a highlight of the Civic roster.

Taking the Honda Civic to the Edge

The 2017 Honda Civic Type R prototype provides a preview of what the next-generation Civic Type R will look like in its production model form. This model takes off from the wide and low proportions of the Civic Hatchback, pivoting into a sportier look. Some of the distinguishing characteristics of the Civic Type R include aerodynamic exterior design elements and a muscular body.

Unique to the prototype vehicle is an exclusive brushed aluminum-effect exterior finish with strong reflective properties. The front of the vehicle is further accentuated by a bold front fascia with a winged carbon fiber splitter and a red accent line. The car’s air intakes are filled with diamond mesh inserts and slatted ducts further widen the fascia.

The nose of the Civic Type R features the distinctive red “H” badging, which adorns every Type R model on the front grille. The hood features a new intake with an air scoop, and other exterior elements include smoked LED headlight lenses, carbon fiber skirts on the side of the car, high-performance tires, a hefty carbon fiber diffuser running beneath the rear fascia, three functioning tailpipes, and more.

Other Members of the Civic Family

Along with the Civic Type R prototype, an array of custom-made Civic variations made major waves at the SEMA show. This roster included the all-new 2017 Civic Hatchback, the Civic Red Bull Global Rallycross racing model, the 2016 Civic Coupe GRC competitive racer, the 2016 SEGA Sonic Civic Sedan, and more. Over nine custom-tuned and accessorized Civic models were on display in total. These vehicles ran the gamut from coupes, sedans, and hatchbacks.
